As one of the three islands called Gili, Gili Air with its meaning in Bahasa: “little island of water” is simply the largest populated Island of the 3 Gili’s, has 1000 inhabitants. It is the closest spot of the Islands to Lombok within 5kms away. There are two unforgettable moments you should not miss while on this island: Watching the sunrise over the Lombok’s Rinjani Volcano and the bleeding sunset falling on Bali’s Mount Agung with its picturesque view.
Highly recommended and one should not miss is the famous Scuba Diving and Snorkelling location- Gili Air Wall, with plenty of bright multi-coloured fish. This peaceful Island is simply a memorable paradise for honeymooners and travellers looking for rest and relaxation. Gili Air, as small as it might be for the guests, most travellers enjoy strolling along this island and observing the culture and lifestyle of the local villagers. Motor transport is forbidden on the Gili Island and the only transport you may use is bicycle which can be rented from the locals or cidomo, a small horse drawn carriage.
There are plenty of accommodations on the island, may it be on the east, south or west side of the Island, however there are only a few luxurious hotels and villas. Most accommodations are budget rooms such as huts and bungalows, therefore booking in advance is highly advised. With seafood being the most common cuisine due to the large number of fishermen on the Island, there are plenty of reasonably priced restaurants on Gili Air. Most accommodations on the Island are including breakfast every morning and have their own restaurant and bar. Since Gili Air holds one or two parties a week, it is therefore not known for nightlife. However several bars selling a cold relaxing drink can be found.
